Symptoms

Signs of an anal fistula may include recurring pus-like or bloody discharge, persistent moisture unrelated to bowel movements, skin irritation, swelling or redness around the anus, as well as pain or swelling in the surrounding area.
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor for an examination.

Examination and Diagnosis

The appointment begins with a discussion of your symptoms and medical history, followed by a discreet proctological examination.
Patients cannot reliably diagnose an anal fistula themselves - the diagnosis must be made by a doctor. If necessary, additional tests may be ordered to assess the location and course of the fistula tract.

Treatment Methods

At Dr. Maurins Clinic, anal fistulas are treated by placing a drain to allow the fistula tract to drain and help contain the inflammation. In some cases, a fistulotomy or fistulectomy is performed - surgical opening or removal of the fistula tract.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel that most commonly connects the rectum to the skin around the anus.
Signs of an anal fistula may include recurring pus-like or bloody discharge, as well as persistent moisture around the anus that is not directly related to bowel movements. Patients cannot reliably diagnose an anal fistula themselves, so the diagnosis must be confirmed by a doctor.
An anal fistula usually does not heal on its own. An examination by a proctologist is necessary, and in most cases, surgical treatment is required.
The cost of anal fistula treatment starts from €340. A consultation and examination with a proctologist are required before treatment. The doctor determines the most suitable treatment method after the examination, and the total cost depends on the chosen method and the extent of the condition.
